Depends on whether you're trying to finance your trip or trying to impress the interviewing consular officer. There is no dollar amount that's required to obtain a tourist visa. You have to convince the interviewer that you're not an intending immigrant and that you will return. Anyway, it won't help you much to show an account with a million dollars, if you don't look like a million bucks. Officers see lots of false accounts, one more won't impress them much.

Edit: Going for Baroque. Quite right, a very good story indeed. I hope the officer at least got some sort of award out of it. That sort of intiative deserves to be recognized.

aside from bank account the consulate /embassy is far more concerned that you will return to your country so showning that you have very strong ties to your homeland via job, social standing family, real estate will certainly help facilitating a visitors visa

How long are you going for? What areas are you visiting? Are you staying in hotels or with friends/family? What do you want to do on your trip? All of these things need to be part of your calculation, because costs can vary widely depending on what part of the country you're going to, and what kind of lodging you're going to have.

The fund must be sufficient to cover all expenses, from airfare, hotels, etc. during the stay. Do the math..

Anyway, this is not the biggest issue, the most important issue is you must be able to prove ties to your home country... anything that convince the consular that you will return home...

It's not about how much money you *have,* it's about how much you earn. George has already answered your question.

However, George may like this story- Once, a visa applicant flashed a shoebox full of cash as proof he didn't need to go to the USA to earn money. The young consular officer sensed something amiss. Upon questioning, the applicant admitted that he had "rented" the money for $100. He told the applicant that he was going to deny the visa. But then he asked if the applicant would like to exit the building from a door far away from the public entrance. The applicant thought a bit, then nodded his head. The consular officer led the applicant to an employee-only door and waved him good-bye. A few minutes later, the sleazy money-renter came in and asked for the applicant. The officer told him his application was denied and that he left by a different exit. The sleazy money-lender knew his money went with the denied applicant and was fit to be tied! Perhaps the shoebox full of money helped the fraudulent applicant when he got home, now that he didn't need to go to the USA as a B-2 immigrant.

So presenting money won't help. In the above history, it didn't help the applicant and it didn't help the sleazoid.
