How to get a proper visa?

My husband is stationed in South Korea and I am planning on going over there to live with him. I have to obtain a visa. I called the Korean Consulate to ask them how to get a visa and they said that they no longer provide long term visas. In order for me to get a visa I have to apply for a travel visa and then once I am in Korea, I have to go to the Consulate every 90 days to extend my visa? Does this sound right if I am planning on staying in Korea for a year? Has anyone had experience with getting a visa to South Korea? Thanks for the help.

He is already in Korea, he does not have orders for me to accompany him, we are paying my way there.

Your husband should work with the central personnel office of his base or unit. In virtually every other country where our troops are statioined, there is something called a "status of forces" agreement. This agreement spells out the ways -- among many other things--that a servicember can have his spouse or other dependants accompany him.

Now it's possible that where he is stationed there is no provision for accompanied dependants. But I suspect it is a matter of agreement and there is a perplanned way for you to get a visa. The consulate may not know about it all...

The information they gave you at the embassy were subject to regular visitors.

Active-duty U.S. military personnel may enter the Republic of Korea under the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) with proper Department of Defense (DOD) identification and travel orders. Every civilian accompanying the force (including DOD civilian employees, invited contractors, and family members) must have a valid passport to enter Korea and should obtain an A-3 SOFA visa prior to arrival in Korea.

See the requirements of the Korean Ambassy for a A-3 Visa application at:

If that's what they tell you you have to do, that's what you have to do.

But if he's stationed there for the US military, you may be eligible for some kind of status as a military spouse, which would let you live there visa-free.
