I'm from Brazil and live in USA as a legal resident for 5 years, married to an American man and pregnant with

our first baby. My parents live in Brazil and they want to come visit when the baby is born for a couple weeks (especially because It's going to be the first grandbaby for them). In Brazil, the American Consulate can give a really hard time to people that try to get a US tourist Visa - because so many come as tourists and stay as immigrants ilegally.
My questions is if there is anything that my husband and I can do to reassure that my parents will have their visa application approved to come visit for 2 weeks.
I'm really nervous about this Visa issue. It would be devasting for me and especially my mom if she can't come.

Thanks so much.

The most important thing is for your parents to show strong ties to Brazil. They should bring any and all evidence of this. If they are still working, they shoud bring their work contracts and paystubs. They should bring titles to property, land and cars, etc. If they have other children and grandchildren living in Brazil, they should bring that as well. As they are older, they shouldn't get as much hassle. Also, they've had time to establish lots of evidence of why they have strong reasons to return to Brazil.

The only thing you could do in addition is perhaps to write letters explaining that you would not be party to helping your parents overstay their visas. Explain why you have reasons to remain in good standing with USCIS, and that you would not jeopardize that standing by assisting your parents to break the law.

Good luck.

There is really nothing you can do other than to provide a letter of invitation and a notice of support for the duration of their visit. However, your parents must qualify for the visas on their own merits, including strong professional, financial, and social ties to Brazil. As you say, many people go to the US as tourists and remain illegally - don't blame the system, blame the people who abuse the system.

The best bet is for your parents to have as many ties to Brazil as possible. Both culturally and economically. If they show the US government that they really want and need to be in Brazil the better their chances for a visa.
