There are a couple of options you could try for this. One is the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). http://www.dfat.gov.au/

I think that the only passport that DFAT will rush at you with is an Australian one but they may at least be able to advise you about the admissibility of Australian citizens to citizenship in some European countries once they are more than a couple of generations removed. I used to think that once your grandparents expired - that was it. Your hopes of a second citizenship were lost.

The other is the French Embassy in Canberra. You could ask the French about dual citizenship.

Interesting Footnote:
A point of interest in the recent Tour de France was that former Rugby League player John Ribot was travelling in France as John Ribot de Bresnac - he was never game to use his full monika as a Rugby League Player - and Rugby Player Simon Poidoven was travelling as Simon Le Poidoven. Neither of these men used their full French names during their footballing days.

You do not need a french passport. An australian passport will allow entry anywhere in Europe.

I dont think so. Im pretty sure if your parents were born there you can apply for french citizenship by descendant. Could be different tho im not completely sure
