That isn't necessarily true. The US doesn't allow visa-free entry UK citizens (or any other Visa Waiver countries) if they do not arrive on an approved airline, cruiseliner or by land. Most, if not all, airlines and cruiseliners are approved but if the flight is chartered, then a visa will be needed.
If you enter via land, you will not need a visa, only a passport. However, you will have to pay a small fee (about $15) that people arriving by plane or ship do not pay. This will allow you 90 days within the US. But if you decide to leave the US within this time allowance and stay within a neighbouring nation, the time spent in these countries will still count as time spent in the US. |

Sounds like you are travelling via Canada or Mexico but either way, whether travelling by land or air you will ordinarily not require a visa to enter the U.S. for say tourism purposes. Your British passport will allow you to enter as per the visa waiver programme for a maximum of 90 days. |
