Maybe. You have to have a visa that allows you to work, or a valid and current permanent resident card, One other response talked about TN visas that would work for a year at a time in selected occupations.

But having a SSN is not enough. You will be asked to prove your citizenship or working visa or green card if you take employment. Gotta have one of the three, and you aren't a citizen.

If you meet the requirements for a TN Visa (see below) I think you're good to go (or come ;-). The TN visa (which permits Canadians to work in professional jobs for which they are qualified)helps with bringing your family or if you aren't coming across a US-CA border.

According to the US State Dept (link to then TN Visa page is below)...

Professionals of Canada or Mexico may work in the U.S. under the following conditions:

* Applicant is a citizen of Canada or Mexico;
* Profession is on the NAFTA list;
* Position in the U.S. requires a NAFTA professional;
* Mexican or Canadian applicant is to work in a prearranged full-time or part-time job, for a U.S. employer (see documentation required). Self employment is not permitted;
* Professional Canadian or Mexican citizen has the qualifications of the profession

Requirements for Canadian Citizens

Canadian citizens usually do not need a visa as a NAFTA Professional, although a visa can be issued to qualified TN visa applicants upon request. However, a Canadian residing in another country with a non-Canadian spouse and children would need a visa to enable the spouse and children to be able to apply for a visa to accompany or join the NAFTA Professional, as a TD visa holder. A Canadian citizen without a TN visa can apply at a U.S. port of entry with all of the following:

If your social security card does not say you can work, then you cannot. Did you ever fill out work permission paperwork (and pay the fee) with USCIS? If not, then you need to. This can only be done though, if you have applied for a green card (permanent residency).
