I have a british passport. Does my wife who's indian need a visa when travelling to the EU, especially Ireland?

Ireland, while in the EU, is NOT a Schengen signatory and therefore has different visa requirements than the EU.

All citizens of India must apply for a visa before they travel to Ireland. It doesn't matter to whom they are married.

It depends whether you are are british citizen (EU-member) and depends on the status of your wife in the United Kingdom. The following statements apply only if you hold a British EU passport as a British citizen

â€¢ if she holds a "husband, wives and partners visa" she would need a Schengen visa to travel to most of the continental EU countries and a separate visa to travel to Ireland, Bulgaria, and Romania.

â€¢ if she holds a "Residence Card of a Family Member of an EEA National" (see sample at source #1) she could travel visa free for visits of up to 90 days to all other EU countries if you travel together. If she wants to travel on her own however she again would need a visa.

The visa for Ireland must be applied for at the visa office of the Irish Embassy in London, Montpellier House, 106 Brompton Road, London SW3 1JJ or the consulates at 16 Randolph Crescent, Edinburgh EH3 7TT or at Brunel House, 2 Fitzalan Road, Cardiff CF24 0EB.

Application for a continental EU Schengen visa must be made at the embassy of the country which is planned to be visited mostly, or if the visiting time is equally distributed at the embassy of the first country traveled to.

The application for a visa is free of charge for a spouse of an EU/EEA citizen.
