i'll cut and paste from another message I wrote to someone in england. It should be the same in Scotland.

If you are legally working in the UK you can ask your employer to apply for a permanent working permit for you. easy

the employer/company must state that your job position in the company can't be filled in by nobody else in the UK but you. not easy.

To prove that, they must advertise your job for a certain time (i think is one month) and convince the Home Office you are invalueble to the company and they would suffer without you (and I don't mean in a sentimental way).

It's used a lot in the NHS, security and creative industry, but can be used by everyone ( and easier for ZA, AU and NZ)
If you have the skills and your employer values you, you're in!

a person can only be sponsored by an employer or a family member. see the us citizenship and immigratoin offiical site it will have a .gov ending on it.
