I was with the Embassy for 30 years... There are two ways to be Ambassador and nether are good. One is to be someone influencial on the outside and be really IN WITH the president, whoever he is and He will appoint you as Ambassador to wherever. The other way is to be part of the Foreign Service.. a Foreign Service employee.. take the tests, and work yourself up. IF you aspire to be ambassador(I did not), you can work as Consular Officer, you can work as a general Services Officer in a particular mission and if you say the right things(not the truth in most cases), you might be considered as either the Ambassador or the Charge' d'affaires(which is the Deputy Ambassador). I have NEVER seen any U.S. Ambassador that was good. I could write a book on the garbage that has been rerpresenting our country in foreign Embassies.

the closest that most people get is to work for the State Dept. anything more requires that you be called as one from a department of the government. Or you could do what a few others have tried and start talking to a foreign government without any official call from your own.
