I have a question regarding immigration?

hi , i have an argentinian friend who lives in ibiza for 3 years but couldnt get papers till hes their for 1 more year i think. recently he came on a 2 week holiday to me in ireland and had a lot of bother when he returned to ibiza, with them saying he should not have left spain while awaiting papers. now he thinks that its the same as if he just arrived in ibiza from argentina for the first time and that the 3 years he was there were for nothing and is severly depressed and i feel really guilty too because he came to me.. does anyone know is it definately likely that he has lost the 3 years he was in ibiza in regards to the amount of time longer he will have to wait for papers now.. We are both distraught over this.. thank you everyone.
