I wish to apply for a work visa in the EU. However, I have a misdemeanor theft charge dating back to 1981.

It is the lowest class of a misdemeanor possible to have. I paid an $85 fine and performed 225 hours community service. Will this prevent me from obtaining a work visa for the EU?

Yes, in Poland it is 5 years. before that, doesn't matter.

Don't worry You will be fine since it happened such a long time ago and it was something so small.I would suggest that when you file your work visa application you don't lie about it if asked..and I would have the court papers in hand that you actually did not spend jail time.Most of the time Visas are denied when they see you have lied on your application and/or you have served Prison time and it was more than a misdemeanor.So don't worry,Be honest and you will be fine.Best of luck!

They will do a background check on you. Just like the US does a background check on others trying to get a visa to the US.

They could use this against you when applying for a work visa in the EU. Remember each EU country has it own visa/permit rules etc
