It just occurred to me, but does one have to?

The answer is that it depends on the countries!

I have dual citizenship (UK and Ireland) and am not required to pay tax in either country unless I am ordinarily resident for tax purposes in one or both in any year or if I have income arising in the country (for instance, I might let my flat). So that I might have to pay in both countries if I were living and working six months a year in each.

But this in fact has nothing to do with my citizenship as it would apply if I was there on a temporary work visa too.

There is only one country that I know of that requires citizens to pay taxes whether they set foot in the country or not and that is USandA. Quite how they justify making people write cheques for roads they don't use is a big mystery.

And there are some countries that do not require citizens or residents to pay any tax at all. Dubai for instance. Unless they are USandA citizens in which case they can pay American taxes instead!

You pay taxes in the country of residence but, for us citizens, there is an income limit over which you may have to pay taxes in the US. You still have to file an income tax form in the US though.

Usually no. The US has tax agreements with most countries where you do not pay taxes to both countries unless you make over a certain amount.

It depends on which countries, and what your situation is.

Americans ARE allowed to have dual citizenship, it's been that way for a long time. And, as an American, you are expected to file US taxes no matter where you live; even if you have never lived in the US.
