the current regulations to my knowledge are that on a student visa you are entitled to stay in the UK for one year after you have graduated and you are entitled to work on that visa for that year but an application for a work permit must be submitted during that period.

If you are coming to the end of your one year grace period and have not submitted an application for a work permit or have not found work then you are overstaying your privileges and will be requested to return to your home country.

if you do manage to secure a work permit then you are in the clear. i would confirm this with the homeoffice website

Nope, if your visa expires, you have to leave the county. If you overstay, you will be banned from even applying for a visa for 10 years.

What course where did you take? Not English was it!
