yes...I'm pretty sure to mainain your citizenship, you must spend at least 1/2 of the year here. For example, if you own a house in another county, you cannot live there year-round, but just 6 months of the year

kadel
I don't think so. I know of people who lived overseas for years.

"LifeAsItIS" is correct.

Only permanent residents (green card holders) have a residency requirement. US citizens do not !!! You can live the rest of your life outside US and there is no way that you will loose your US citizenship (unless you commit acts of treason against the US)

Also it doesn't matter if you are a born or naturalized US citizens, with the exception that naturalized US citizens can not be president the rights of the 2 are identical, nobody can take away your citizenship (unless you commit acts of treason as I stated)

No, if you are a citizen or dual-citizen you don't have to go back to the states to keep your status as a citizen of our country. You only have to go back if you are naturalized or a resident "alien".

no, but as we're climbing to the top of everyones shltlist is not wise to linger overseas too long. uk wants us to be gone a year after a 6 month period. france, 3 months, gone a week. germany, there for 6, gone a year.

LifeAsItIS
absolutely not!

american citizenship does not just expire! you also do not have to even be considered a legal resident of the US (for ex., people living abroad claim that as their legal residency). you can also obtain citizenship in another country (called dual-citizenship) and still maintain your american citizenship.

you can give it up if you choose, however!

No. Only if you are nationalized, you have some limitations. For example; let's say you were born abroad, came to live in USA and became a citizen. I you go back to your country of origin, you can live there only seven years minus one day. You have to come back to USA before the seventh year is up. But if you go to live in another country different from your native one you can live there for ever. But there are some other limitations if you are collecting retirement. You will have to talk to the people in the SS Administration and clear this up to make sure that you will get your money no matter how long you stay away.

No you are always a citizen. For tax purposes you must be out of the US more than 180 days not to pay taxes in the US
