If you have dual American and Israeli citizenship are you required to serve in IDF at 18?
Find answers to your legal question.

If you have dual American and Israeli citizenship are you required to serve in IDF at 18?

I understand that all Israeli citizens are required to serve in IDF at age 18 until 21 unless they have some sort of physical/mental help problems or are chassidic.

I'm very curious as to if a 17 year old who holds dual American and Israeli citizenship has to serve in the IDF when he/she turns 18.

If they are required to serve and do not, will they lose their Israeli citizenship?

Or if they are required to serve and do so, will they lose their American citizenship?

You need to be EXTREMELY careful with this issue. If the Israeli government has you in their records as citizen (i.e. you have a passport), then yes, you will be required to serve if you set foot in Israel. Many young people who have grown up in other countries, who have perhaps one or two Israeli parents but in every other way feel very un-Israeli, make a visit to relatives and find themselves, either upon entering or trying to exit the country, being escorted to an Army base and thrown in the brig.

Now, practically speaking, these young people are generally able to get out and leave Israel with the help of a lawyer, after spending a few weeks in detention. But it is unpleasant.

Furthermore, Israeli consulates and Embassies overseas tend to be able to/willing to offer little help on the matter; I've known people who were >>assured<< by the Embassy that they would have no trouble, only to be processed for induction when they arrived.

Bottom line, if you don't want to serve, avoid visiting Israel from the age of 18-30 or so.

I have friends who are Israeli. One came to the US with their parents when they were young and returned to Israel a few years ago at age 30. That friend was not required to serve in the IDF. Another friend served in the IDF then went to the States and then returned back to Israel. You will need to contact Israeli government and I suspect a part of it has to do with where you are currently residing. If you are in the US then you may not have to serve but if you are in Israel you may need to serve.
