and you overstay the visa, how do you go about getting into the country a couple of years later, will you be refused access?

Hard to say. If you overstay and they know it they will ban you for a period of time. Depends on what kind of visa and how long you overstayed. Also, if your overstay was a long time ago they won't know about it, they didn't do much to track departures until 2003 and even then records are incomplete. And the reason you overstayed could be a decent excuse and therefore relevant.
If you ask you'll definitely have a problem.
Has your visa expired? If it has, go online to the visa waiver program site and see if you qualify. If you don't you can apply for a new one and see what happens. But they'll ask if you overstayed and if you lie and get caught you're banned for sure.
If your visa has not expired, you could just take a chance and go. |

If you overstay in US, it is recommended to get your visa renewed to avoid illegal status. However, British immigrations authorities at Heathrow airport can't deny access of a British National.
