When you entered the US for the first time as a conditional Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR), your passport should have been stamped accordingly. You may travel with that stamp until you receive your Green Card. So yes, you can travel abroad. And yes, you can also work abroad, to a degree. The whole purpose of a Green Card is to allow you to legally reside and work in the US. If you are not going to live in the US, then you should not have LPR status. If you have to stay out of the country for an extended period of time (greater than one year but less than two), you must first file for permission in the form of a Re-Entry Permit. You must apply for the permit before you leave the US. |

The entire reason for getting a Green Card is because you intend to live and work in the US. If the CIS suspects you're working abroad they can and will deny you reentry into the United States and will take your immigrant status away from you. |
