I once had a girlfriend who had an English father and an Irish mother. She was allowed to hold an Irish and a British passport. To my knowledge nothing has changed. So I guess the answer is, yes. |

Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1956
Part II Citizenship
7.24—(1) A person is an Irish citizen from birth if at the time of his or her birth either parent was an Irish
citizen or would if alive have been an Irish citizen.
pdf downloadable version from the Irish gov't. website. I think it is the dept of justice, equality, and law reform. |

depends on your current citizenship, if your mom or any of her side of the family still lives in Ireland you might try for dual citizenship, then it would be harder for them to refuse you. cant really imagine why they would refuse you unless you had a criminal record or something.
good luck,

Dual citizenship is not illegal in Britain as the last poster suggested. Remember the Canadian owner of the Daily Telegraph who became a dual citizen so he could sit in the House of Lords. I think you would probably have an easy time getting Irish citizenship. But even without it you can live and work there, and non-resident Irish citizens can't mail in their votes for elections anyway so I'm not sure what advantages you would gain. |

Yes, but that does not necessarily mean that you are entitled to dual citizenship. I believe, in law, that you have to surrender other passports to hold a British one, and the converse may well be true with an Irish one. The law being the law, many people ignore it and think they have dual citizenship which often is not necessarily so! |

Hi Noel. I've just got myself an Irish passport through descent so did lots of research. Here's the deal:
Scenario 1: if your mother was born in Ireland, you are automatically a citizen of Ireland. In fact, you don't even have to declare it or register. If this is the case, just fill in the passport application form.
2. If you mother is Irish by descent, and doesn't currently hold Irish nationality, all you have to do is demonstrate your lineage to the embassy in London (or Edinburgh) with all the correct documents. Sounds like you are more bonafide Irish than I was. My two grandparents are Irish, and my mum was born in London. So the consulate people said to me your mother is already Irish whether she knows it or not. We (my brothers and sisters) showed all the birth, marriage and death certificates and duley were awarded citizenship through descent. See?
Ignore that bit that says your mother would have to have declared her citizenship before you were born, that bit doesn't apply anymore.
Oh, and the UK has no problem with you holding dual nationality, so long as the other country doesn't mind either. Which they dont, in this case. Shame the passports aren't big green ones with harps on anymore, but still, Im chuffed with mine :) |
