Hi everyone...I'm visiting my friend in AZ next month for US thanksgiving. I'm 20 years old. When I was 18, I went to her house, and at the border I was given a very hard time and I was sent back until I could prove "ties" to Canada. I also required a "letter of invitation". After that I was able to go successfully and have never had a problem since then (I go shopping there often). I have an 8 month old daughter now, who will also being going on this trip and I don't want any problems this time around. I have my baby's passport and long form birth certificate so I think that she is all covered to get accross the border. We don't remember what she wrote in the letter of invitation and really could use help writing it. I'm staying for 9 days. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm from Ontario, so I'm a Canadian Citizen, and I do have my passport. I'm a single mother, and on the long form birth certificate, it says under father "information not provided" and I did not have any trouble getting her passport....so I thought I would be ok?

At age 18, you would be questioned going across the border! If you are only travelling for a few days and have a husband, home, job, etc, by now, you should not have a problem.
Except for your daughter. If not travelling with your husband, you need a notarized letter from him that you have his permission to take the child from place to place from date to date, and this can be verified by calling phone #. Due to the high incidence of custody disputes, absconding parents, child smuggling, bogus "adoptions," and other horrors perpetrated upon children, if only one parent is traveling with a minor child, that parent must prove: permission of the other parent, the other parent is deceased, or a court order of sole custody and court's permission to remove the child from its jurisdiction. No "letter of invitation" solves this problem.
Single parent? You have a big problem -- the father still has rights to his child and you still need his written permission or a court order of sole custody, etc. |

If you are Canadian, I am surprised they treated you that way. We don't need letters of invitation to shop across the border. So why need one to visit? I do hope it is an isolated incident. If not, there may be something in your file to make them suspect you. Hope not.** |
