Obviously if you step over the threshold of an embassy in London you are theoretically in that country (whichever embassy it may be) just wondered if the same laws applied at the US air base at Lakenheath in Suffolk.

US bases overseas are not extraterritorial, i.e. they are still part of UK territories. However NATO treaties stipulate, the US Military Police and Courts have jurisdiction over all military personel in connection with the base. That means that if a US soldier were to steal something from the PX he would be arrested by MP and tried in the military courts, if a civilian with no military connections were to do the same he/she would be detained by MP but turned over to local police and courts as soon as possible. |

The status of US bases abroad is usually governed by the "Status of Forces" agreement in effect at the time. These vary within a country over time as they are altered or renewed, and are not always the same for all countries. The information from previous answers is pretty good, but for precise info you would have to check the applicable Status of Forces Agreement. .This website is a paper prepared for Congress in the context of a Status of Forces Agreement for Iraq, but gives lots of info on agreements in general.

Best answer- Maybe.
Whether the Brits would ask for (and receive) jurisdiction depends on a lot of factors- who was involved (military or local) and the nature of the event (parking ticket or felony)
BTW, embassies don't need to "belong" to a country- they can be leased. But events on embassy property are generally not subject to local law. Without further conditions, I'd say that the Brits would not want to have a lot of jurisdiction over Lakenheath. |
