Is a bombing of an embassy really an act of war.?

Chuckles D
Yes, an embassy is technically sovereign land. So, our embassy in Iran was actually America.

breastfed43
But embassys are not usually bombed by sovereign nations

"I Want to Know Your Answer
That happened in my country, Indonesia, before. A terrorist organization called Jemaah Islamiyah bombed the Australian embassy in jakarta.

I guess you can say the terorrists wanted to decalre war on Australia.

DAMn you terrorists!!!

An embassy is considered the territory of the nation that it represents. So an attack on an embassy is regarded as if you attacked that particular nations homeland.

babyshoes
yes,an embassy is representative of an independent country.

An embassy is the representative of the entire country in the host country. In fact, inside the building is considered a foreign country in the host country. Hence, attacking the building is equal to attacking the country of that embassy!

Kill any of my people in a political context and you ask for war. Kill them on my own ground and I am hard pressed to resist war upon you.

Clear enough?

skcs69
Yes, because all embassys are concidered as on US soil.

dognhorsemom
You can argue whether or not an embassy bombing is an act of war, but in that argument you cannot say that the embassy and its grounds are "sovereign soil" of the country the embassy represents: they are not.

No, they really aren't. That is an extremely common misperception. The grounds and building are simply protected by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

And shooting an RPG at the embassy is Athens is NOT the same as shooting one at Santa Barbara's city hall. To begin with, I don't work at the city hall....

KoKo
YES! Always has been, always will!

?
Technically speaking, however it really depends on how and who attacks it. Today's attack was done by some leftist terrorist. As bad as it was, it could have been worse.

Carter did nothing when the Embassy in Iran was taken hostage. He showed just how weak he and America was at the time.

It would be interesting to consider where the world would be, today, had we acted and attacked Iran in 1979.

Eddie G
Yes, it is. The land that the embassy occupies is considered the territory of the nation that occupies it.

ima_averagejoe
yes. It is US soil and is the same as marching troops onto the beach in Southern California or bombing Pearl Harbor or 9/11.

MaybePOTUS
If carried out by or on the order of another nation, then yes.

Embassies are US soil; an attack on one would be like an attack on any US government building.

Jeffery C
The bombing of an embassy is just as much of an act of war as actually attacking a country.

It *could* be. Embassies are the homeland of the country that occupies them, so an attack on one of them is like an attack on their own soil.

But that doesn't mean "war" is declared against the attackers.

Chicken Jones
Would you prefer they bomb your house instead?
