I've seen the news about the new requirement of obtaining a passport to travel outside of the country, and to re-enter the U.S by air, but is it also a requirement for land travel to re-enter the U.S?

Not at this time, but it will be a requirement in the near futre...i forget the exact date. Get your passport now before the rush begins if you plan on traveling in the next few years. |

No. Most everyone has answered this question incorrectly.
Beginning January 23, 2007, passports will ONLY be required for those people traveling by air outside of the US, including Mexico and Canada. All other means of travel (cruise ships, train, automobile) will not require a passport. But you will be required to have some form of government issued ID (state driver's license/id card).
Beginning January 1, 2008 all citizens traveling outside of the US MAY be required to have a passport. The legislature has yet to make the decision. |

as of the first of january, you do need a passport to get back in. that includes if you traveled to canada or mexico. |
