Is it right to leave my citizenship?

hi guys,

i m a malaysian citizen...... i m getting married next year..... my fiance is an indian citizen..... according to him, he says that our marriage registration will be in india & i hv to leave my malaysian citizenship as i will be registering my marriage in india... whrelse my family members is telling me not to leave my citizenship ans asking me to register my marriage in malaysia as they are worried bout me n my safety thr after marriage.... now the question is : Is it ok for me to leave my citizenship n be a indian national.... is it safe n will i hv any problem in future bcoz of it? pls help

don't give up your citizenship, u don't know what will happen in India, play it safe..

You cannot automatically become an Indian citizenship upon your marriage to an Indian citizen. Marriage and Citizenship are two different things. You will need to live in India for at least 7 years before you can claim citizenship. You should speak to the Indian embassy on this.

By Registration (Section 5(1))
Indian Citizenship by registration can be acquired (not illegal migrant) by: -

(a) Persons of Indian origin who are ordinarily resident in India for SEVEN YEARS before making application under section 5(1)(a) (throughout the period of twelve months immediately before making application and for SIX YEARS in the aggregate in the EIGHT YEARS preceding the twelve months). Application shall be made in Form I.
(b) Persons of Indian origin who are ordinarily resident in any country or place outside undivided India under section 5(1)(b).
(c) Persons who are married to a citizen of India and who are ordinarily resident in India for SEVEN YEARS (as mentioned at (a) above) before making application under section 5(1)(c). Application shall be made in Form-II.
(d) Minor children whose both parents are Indian citizens under section 5(1)(d). Application shall be made by his parents in Form-III.
(e) Persons of full age whose both parents are registered as citizens of India under section 5(1)(a) or section 6(1) can acquire Indian citizenship under section 5(1)(e). Application shall be made in Form III-A.
(f) Persons of full age who or either of the parents were earlier citizen of Independent India and residing in India for ONE YEAR immediately before making application under section 5(1)(f). Application shall be made in Form III- B.
(g) Persons of full age and capacity who has been registered as an OVERSEAS CITIZEN OF INDIA (OCI) for five years and residing in India for ONE YEAR before making application under section 5(1)(g). Application shall be made in Form III-C.

Where your marriage will be registered depends on which country you have it in. It sounds like your finance wants it to be done in India. Or perhaps you can arrange for two ceremonies. You should talk to the Malaysians and see where they register their marriages and ask if it is possible to register an overseas marriage (some countries do allow this).

In any sense if you live in India make sure you keep an up to date passport with a valid visa inside it and keep regular contact with some of your relatives.

If you give up your Malaysian Citizenship/passport, you will find that your mobility will be seriously curtailed as Indian Nationals are usually required to have visas when traveling overseas.
