Is it true that americans don't need visas to travell abroad?

I've heard that americans can travel anywhere they want outside the states without a visa. Is that true. It sounds implausible to me. I would appreciate your help on the topic

Definitely not true. Americans, like any other travelers, need a Passport to travel to other foreign countries.
You are probably thinking of when you go down to local border towns like Mexicalli & Tijuana where you can easily cross the border to shop or sightsee in these border towns.
For the rest of the world, you need the country's respective visa. |

As others have already said, Americans don't need visas to travel to some countries, but do need visas for others. Here is where you can look up the entry requirements for Americans to travel to every country in the world:

Are you confusing a passport with a visa? Americans need a passport to visit most countries. Canada and Mexico had been regular exceptions, but after 1/1/07, a passport will be needed to enter Mexico. A visa is denoted by the stamp that is put into a passport by the country you are entering. (For more details about visas, see the link below.) U.S. citizens have been able to visit most countries of the world as tourists without obtaining a visa in advance. In a few cases, it is necessary to visit the consulate of the country before going and getting the visa stamped in advance. My boss had to do this when visiting China. |

After 9/11, the world has changed... Even for us... A visa is needed for most travel outside of the US, as well as a valid passport.... |

Um, no. Some countries (such as the US and Canada) dont need visas for their citizens to travel to each other but in other countries you need a visa. |

like most of them said, for most of Europe and canada you don't need visas, but you do need a passport. If you have the sudden urge to visit a "unsafe" country you need a visa
also Andreas you TRUST wikipedia?! |

It's different for different countries. Mostly it's getting back into America where trouble may be encountered. My husband and kids are American and have only needed a legitimate photo ID and/or birth certificate to travel to my country. I'm sure this is the case for a lot of other countries. Although this will change in the new year as the US Immigration is requiring its citizens who travel to use a passport to reenter the country. |
