Yes.
You must be a legal permanent resident (LPR) to enlist in the military. In fact, roughly 35,000 non-citizens are currently serving in the active miliary (2005 data).
Also, the 2004 National Defense Authorization Act implemented reduced peacetime waiting periods for US citizenship applications, among other benefits toward citizenship versus the general public.
All said, citizenship is required for virtually all appointments as a commissioned, warrant or National Guard officer. |

Yes, I have known several non-U.S. citizen service members. Security clearance restrictions will limit the jobs you have available (barring an exception for the good of the service and the United States), but it will also be easier for you to become a U.S. citizen if you so desire.
The United States has a long history of welcoming non-citizen service members. (Non-mercenary) Military service is one of the highest demonstrations of loyalty to a country and faith therein.
The best answer here is: Yes, a non-citizen can join the American armed forces. They should see a recruiter for conditions, which are numerous. |
