Is my dad British-American?

He was born in Tanzania of Iranian descent. But he got British (United Kingdom) citizenship there. I think at that time Tanzania was owned by Britain. He then came to America. So is he British?

If your father applied for and was granted British citizenship before Tanzania became independent, then he is a British citizen. He must have applied or it though as it was not awarded to Tanzanians automatically.

If he has British citizenship and you were born after he became a British citizen, then you are a British citizen by descent automatically. You cannot pass this citizenship on to your children (unless they are born in the UK) as citizenship by descent can only pass down one generation. However a child of a citizen by descent who is born in the UK is a British citizen by birth.

He may well have been a British subject at that time but he would have lost that when Tanzania acquired independence. Only people who have a father born in the UK are now British citizens.
