Is my wifes passport still valid after we got married and she changed her last name for mine?

My wife still has her american passport issued before we got married. Now she has my name. Can she still use the passport to travel abroad?

She needs to have it amended. My wife had to send hers in and pay a fee (of course) and got it back a month later with a line on the back page that he name was amended on such and such a date. This was pre 9/11 by a year though so that may have changed.

No. Since September 26, 2005, Passport Services no longer amends currently valid passports. Instead, customers are issued replacement passports. Please see the PASSPORT CORRECTIONS/CHANGES CHART to determine the specific procedure to follow depending on the type of change or correction.


You'll need to get a whole new passport with the new name.

I think it is iffy. I know there is a way to get her name changed in the passport (I had to do it). Look at the dept of State website to get specifics...but you end up sending away the passport and the marriage certificate, and they will put a formal notice in the passport that the name has changed.

If you get caught with a different name on the ticket vs. the passport, the security will think you are trying to pull something. And hopefully if it is a problem, you'll get caught here and not once you've arrived internationally (it would stink not to be allowed into the country!)

Instead of paying the fee, I would just take a certified copy of the marriage liscense, especially if it is in ENGLISH and just tuck it into the back. Believe me if they have any questions the security can verify your identity.

yes, she can still use it but should apply for an addemdum which, after she turns it in with the paperwork, will show that she has a new last name. She just fills out the paperwork, sends in the passport with a certified copy of the marriage license and of course a fee, and the agency makes the notation.
