Assignments are fixed by the State Department at one, two or three years, depending on the post. The most difficult places to live are the shortest. Extensions of one year can be requested, and other extensions for important family reasons are sometimes granted, but the absolute maximum anywhere is five years.
Example, my assignments to Medan Indonesia, Lagos, Moscow and Calcutta were two years. Seoul and Athens were three years. People going to Iraq and Afghanistan serve one year. |

The statutory limit is 5 years, though current regulations limit service to 3 years at any non-hardship post. As another respondent correctly answered, tours are typically 1, 2, or 3 years depending on the post. A hardship tour (say, in Afghanistan) which is set for one year could be extended at the officer's request. |
