I need some help with this: I wanted my mom to come visit us here in the US this summer. I am a Romanian citizen -- and so is she -- and I am married to an American citizen and have 2 small children. I have a green card and am planning on applying for citizenship.
The consul at the US Embassy in Bucharest decided she is at high risk to not return to Romania and didn't grant her a tourist visa, even though she came to visit in 1999 and did return in the required time.
I am very bummed out because we just had a baby and I wanted my mom to be able to spend time with her new grandson.
What can I do?

My husband had to send an official notarized invitation letter to my mom; it specified the purpose of the visit (my son's 3rd birthday and my youngest son's baptism) and the fact that we'll be financially responsible for her being her and provide lodging.
I am thinking about having my husband's family -- all of which are US citizens -- to send letters to the US Embassy in Bucharest to petition that they grant her a visa. I wonder if that will work...
A couple other details pertaining to my question:
-- I am a stay-at-home mom, so I wouldn't be needing my mom's help watching the kids.
-- my mother is married to my father and my sister lives in Romania, so my entire family is there, therefore making it absurd for her to be likely to overstay her visa.

My mom will apply again, just that the 4hour+ wait in line outside the embassy and the $140 fee are sort of hindering the effort :(

Romania is being really crappy about the visas recently, even for regular people who have apparently fulfilled the requirements. My husband and I are in the same situation and my daughter's already 9 months old and all they have seen has been 2 pictures of her :( My only advice is to write to your senator and state that she has already been her and obeyed the time limits and you would like to ask for your senator's help by writing a letter to the embassy. Even if it does not help her get over, they will tell you why she got rejected, but it is definitely worth a shot since you are applying for citizenship and your husband is a US national. |
