Multiple Entry schengan visa?

I am going to Austria for a few days at the end of March. I am a South African passport holder living in the UK.
I would like to get a shengan visa for as long as possible in case I would like to travel to some other destinations in the EU, what is the best way to do this?

Your wish to get a visa as long as possible may not be fulfilled.
Schengen visa are issued based on itineraries, you may however get a multiple entry visa valid for 6 month and authorizing a stay of up to 90 days if you are able to provide itineraries, hotel reservations, confirmed plane or train tickets for various European destinations for the next six months and if you are able to provide the proof that you can cover the expenses of that travel.

ask for a multiple visa entries at the Austria Embassy in the UK ,enter Austria first if you get the visa and then proceed to other countries

Multiple entry visas for the Schengen countries are not usually issued to ordinary tourists. In order to get a multiple entry visa, you need to show business or family connections.
