Well... it's not that simple. We could come into the country legally with either a tourist visa, a student visa, or a business visa. However, entering the country legally is completely different from staying in the country legally. The best way to stay here a long time legally is on a student visa, but that means he needs to apply and be accepted at a college and of course stay in college and finish a degree. That requires as you may know.... LOTS OF MONEY.... anyway, if this is an affordable situation once he gets his degree he will get a one-year work permit and if he finds an employer who wants to sponsor him, it would take him about six years after he graduates from college to get a green card. If we add all of that up, 4 yrs for college degree, + 1 with the work permit, + 6 with work visa prior to green card. We're looking at about 11 yrs before he can get a green card legally.
