My german wife would like to become an english citizen is this possible without giving up german citizenship?

I am an english citizen . I married my wife 2 years ago and she has lived in the uk for over 5 years. I believe she automatically qualifies for english citizenship. However we understand germany does not allow dual nationality. If she became an english citizen would she lose her german nationality or would germany just not recognise her english citizenship. thank you

Basically Germany does not allow dual nationality: The key word here is "basically".

The German Act on Nationality or German nationality law however grants a couple of exceptions, one of them is related to german citizens who became citizen of a country that belongs to the European Union.

According to Sections 25 and 12 of this law ( §§ 25 und 12 StAG) German Citizens are allowed to get the citizenship of any EU-Country without losing the german one, in this case a dual nationality is allowed (§25) the same is granted for EU-citizens who want to become german citizens, they do not have to give up their other EU-citizenship (§12)
.

For more information look the following links:

German Act on Nationality (Staatsangehörigkeitsgesetz in German Language) For your wife is very important to read section 25 (§25)

Information about Dual citizenship - multiple nationality in Germany. Official Web Site of the German Federal Ministry of the Interior (english version)

Scroll with your mouse until you find the question: "Do special rules apply to EU citizens?" There is a part in the answer : "According to Section 25 para. 2 of the Nationality Act, Germans who become naturalized citizens of another EU country may receive permission to retain their German citizenship."

The United Kingdom accept dual citizenship however recently have put out new rules saying that people with dual citizenship are not allowed to have more than 1 travelling document. In this case she cannot have german passport and British Passport.

With regards to German laws, it means she will have to give up german nationality if she chooses to become a citizen of UK.

However if she has been living here for more than five years on the basis of being your wife then there is no reason why she cannot continue to live that way (indefinite leave to remain in the UK) if she wishes to preserve her German nationality but this will mean no British passport of registration as a citizen.

hope that helps.

She would lose her nationality. Germany would recognise her british citizenship but she would have to hand back her German passport. Only children born in countries who grant citizenship due to place of birth ie UK with German parents are allowed dual nationality but even that is fairly complicated to achieve.
