My visa stamped for switzerland , applied for 6 months, but dates given are from jan 28 to april 5 2009,whats ?

A Schengen tourist visa issued by Switzerland works different than a US visa. Tourist visa are valid for a maximum of 6 months and a maximum of a 90 days duration of visit. Tourist visa are generally issued based on itineraries presented and are valid only during the time as stated on the visa. That means if you enter Switzerland on April 4, you must leave on April 5. The other important column is the "Duration of Visit ____ days" column (3rd row). It determines for how many days you may totally stay.
The duration is dependent on the documentation provided with your visa application. If your travel health insurance was only valid until April 5, the visa will be valid until this day. If your passport should be expiring on July 5, the visa will expire three month earlier. If the proof of availability of funds per day (CHF100/Rs.4,250/-) is not provided for the whole period the visa duration will be shortened accordingly.
Attached as sample is a Schengen visa issued by Finland which was valid from February 7, to August 7, 2008 and has authorized a total of 30 days of stay within that period.

@ IbuGuru: Switzerland, same as any other Schengen country issues visa valid for up to 180 days (6 month) with a maximum number of 90 days of authorized stay. Any Schengen visa provison tells that visa may be valid for 90 days in a 180 day period. See the visa sample I have added as source!

Switzerland does not allow 6 month tourist visas. 90 days is the maximum. Clearly you do not have sufficient funds for a 90 day tourist visa, or your reasons and itinerary for 90 days as a tourist are inadequate. You did get a max of more than 60 days, which is very generous for Switzerland.

I don't know the specifics, but maybe you needed a different type of visa to stay that long (work?). Maybe you got a 2 month tourist visa.

You can visit Switzerland for a period of only three months maximum. Further length of stays require additional paperwork and forms.

What kind of visa is it? It is possible that Jan 28 is when it's valid from and 5th of April is the last date you can travel on, meaning you have to go there on or before the 5th of April. So if you leave on the 4th of April you have 6 months from that date.
