the said ambassador was called back home by the italian authorities for that reason.

there were actually two italian ambassadors in saudi arabia that converted to islam. one is mario scialoja, in 1987, who is now responsible in italy for the world muslim league (the wahabite muslim association) and torquato cardilli in 2001, who is still working in the italian foreign affairs office, i think...
i am not sure if any of the two were called back because of their new faith...

Good, because he would eventually become hostile towards his government and had access to sensitive material he could hand over to terrorists. I applaud Italy for that. I wish the US had that kind of cajones!
