Political Science & International Studies?

i have a colombian mother, my dad is from Pakistan, & was born in the USA. I speak spanish , english & will be learning Arabic. I will be double majoring in the above title at the Univ of Miami (FL) and then either doing International Law at Law School or a MBA in International Business. I enjoy diplomacy & politics & due to my unique background I feel i will be able to connect with people when i'm older. I dream of working in the field of International Diplomacy or something similar with the United Nations. I just wanted to get some input from other individuals & possibly ideas on other future career paths. Btw, my dad is on my back in order to take over his Civil Engineering company which is really not my dream.

Oh wow sounds great, kinda like im interested in. I'm 17 and live in Australia. At college I will be doing a double degree in International Business and either Commerce:Management or Commerce:Economics. im like you, i love foreign affairs and would love to work as a diplomat and/or in Australian embassies/consulates overseas. I also would like to keep my options open and work in the private business sector, thats why im doing a business degree rather than an arts degree like yourself.I'm also from a mixed background, I have a Croatian father and a Welsh-Australian mother. Dont worry about your dad, do what will ultimately make you happy because this is going to be your career, not his, and it is important that you enjoy it.As for other career options:

*you can always do a graduate course in journalism and become a foreign correspondant.
*If you do international business you can work for a multinational company in a management position.
*there are plenty Non-Government organisations you can work with.
*as well as the UN you could work for the World bank, International Monetary Fund etc
*as well as working in foreign affairs you can work in international trade and other government organizations.
* you can also work as a translator Or you can work in overseas countries teaching English. In places like Africa and Asia you don't need a teaching degree, you just do a month long or so course and you are ready to go.

Congratulations on being a mature, thoughtful young man who is destined for a great future. You are right in that your language skills and cross-cultural background will indeed be very useful to you in these fields.

As long as you are successful in your chosen field, your father will realize that engineering is not for you, and he will come to accept your choices.
