If nothing else there will be a lot of English teachers out there feeling very vulnerable. I nearly took a job in St Petersburg teaching English as a foreign language - bloomin' glad I didn't. The British Council is a big support to British workers in a lot of foreign countries. |

Those keen on learning and keeping up their English will have to face the disappointment of losing the British Alumni Club. http://www.bclub.ru/home/ Normally one can borrow books and other learning tools from the British Council and this facility will no longer be opened for English speakers in Russia and teachers of English. Presumably the British tax payer will be out of pocket, so much having been spent on setting up new offices.
Having seen your "edit": the British Council is supposed to play an apolitical role, but somehow has found itself being kicked about like a political football. It is likely that relations between the UK and Russia will become increasingly sensitive (because that is what the latter seems to want), which means that there might indeed be problems when it comes to obtaining visas and, indeed, leading one's life in a normal way. http://www.guardian.co.uk/russia/article/0,,2241824,00.html |
