Schengen Visa - only for 1 trip?

I am a South African National, currently resident in the UK until November, on a 2-year working holiday visa.
I am going to Portugal next week and am getting a Schengen visa, hopefully with multiple entries. I am also going to Germany, a while after the Portugal trip, but am coming to the UK in-between, ie they are two seperate trips.
If my visa from the Portuguese Consulate is for Multiple Entries and for, say, 90 days, will I able to use it for my Germany trip, or will I have to get an entirely new one for Germany?
I haven't been able to ascertain this from the German website or telephone info service.

I would imagine a Schengen visa would be for the whole Schengen area. Logically, a multi-entry visa would suggest it would be for, well, several entries so I wouldn't see what the problem would be (although officialdom doesn't always know the meaning of "logical").
If you can't find out from the German embassy, maybe the Portuguese can help? The following website exists but doesn't seem like being of much help in answering your question (it also looks like it's aimed more at people living in the USA):

when a country gives you a visa, it is a permission to enter their country,you may visit other countries in the schengen zone,but you entry must always be done trough the country which gave you the visa,
as if you went back to the UK, your visa was given for Portugal not Germany, not sure it would be legal to enter Germany with a visa from Portugal..if you get multiple entry visa it allows you for several stays on the territory of one several states not to exceed 90 days starting from the first day of your trip.
taking the plane to go to Germany with a visa from Portugal, will probably refuse you boarding. |

My understanding is YES, that you could still use the same Schengen visa to visit the Schengen countries during the validity of the visa, as it is valid for multiple entries. |

check around, but i've heard that as a resident in the U.K you can travel with just an ID card....... don't take my word for it though... |
