I drive a School Bus and for the past 9 years I have dealt with many, many 16 year olds.
Most of them are not capable of riding on a school bus much less having a license to drive a car.
The majority of them are nice kids, but too immature to have such a responsibility such as driving a car.
As for 18, well, most have matured enough for getting a license. There should (if not already) be some restrictions though. I just wish they all could somehow know magically the dangers that are out there and how they have to pay attention constantly while driving and always be on the defense for other drivers and that speed can kill themselves and others. |

It should be 13 or 14 so that we can get used to driving for certain. |

The minimum age should be set to at least 18,the only accident I had was caused by a teenager who rear-ended my car while playing with his car radio. I also believe that past a certain age, older driver need to take a road test every year or so. |

In Iowa, u can get a school liscence (back and forth to school) when you're 14 1/2. If your gaurdian(s) are disabled, you can get a regular liscence when you're 15. I started driving alone when I was 13, and nothing ever happened. wear a seatbelt. |

"winston1smith" nailed it down pretty well.
First of all the minimum age is set by the state and it varies between 14 to 18. 16 is the most common one.
You'll observe the more spread out and "isolated" a state is the lower the driving age is i.e. 14 in the Dakotas.
It is universally accepted that the driving age should be 18 ,however, the US made a choice a long time ago not to develop an efficient public transportation system. It was believed that building cars is more profitable then trains and buses (it's now being proven it was a bad idea) but anyway the point is the low driving age is there due to necessity. In most places in the US the only way to get around is by car. |

21 is the best age for anyone to get the driver's license. |

No. By the time a person is between 16-18 years old they have a job that they may need to drive to. If you deny them their license until they are 21 you may be denying them a livelihood. |

I don't think so. Sixteen year olds mostly are more than ready to drive. It is their speeding, drinking, drugs and bad behavior or inexperience that causes them to be bad drivers. That is not going to change with a couple of years grace period. They have done copious studies on this and in countries where the driving age is older there is little to no difference in behaviour. Immaturity goes hand in hand with inexperience. There are plenty of college kids who shouldn't be driving. |

definately. 16-year olds often are not responsible enough for driving a car |

if so, then the maximum age should be set at about 65. 80 year olds are just as dangerous on the road as 16 year olds. |

From my own experience, 16 years old is OK for me. I started to drive when I was 14 or 15, without driver license as you can imagine.
The event that made me doing this was that my mother was hospitalized 15 miles from home. I had no other family at home and there was no neighbors around. We lived in a house isolated in the countryside. All I can say is that I was very cautious, if not over cautious when driving at that time and that I was quite tall for my age, so that no one ever say something as "hey it is a kid who drive this car" (no way to obtain a driver license under 18 in France). The cops never got me mostly because they were too busy drinking in the bars around there. Following this incident I drove regularly until I was in age to pass my driver license.
Some yeas later, at 21, I successfully obtained my driver license and you know what? Once I knew I could legally drive I got suddenly much more confident and I crashed my car in a deep ditch at 60 mph. The car was totaled, but miraculously I wasn't hurt fortunately. |

there are emergency's that happen so let the kids have a license at 16 but it should be in a car with no radio and a Governor that only lets it go to 50 and only 1 passenger under 21 allowed in the car at a time! that will stop them playing with the radios showing off to there friends it would be even better if there was a computer in the car that registered the speed limits and would not let them go over it! until that happens they should have limit driving until they are 21. |
