So why is it that American's hate France again?

France came to our assistance during the Revolutionary War (The Marquis de LaFayette). We have supported them and they have supported us ever since. After the end of WW-II, I think, France began to see its power on the global scene decreasing. I think the government of France decided at that time that they could remain politically relavent on the world stage by not supporting the US, and by not supporting the Soviets.

In the late 1960s France demanded that the US remove it's military bases from France. France withdrew from NATO. The US supported Israel, France Supported the PLO and Hezbollah. During the problems with Libya in the 1980s, France would not let US aircraft fly through French airspace, so they had to fly 8hrs out of their way to bomb libya, and one of the bombers ended up getting shot down. France pulled out of Lebanon when things went to hell, the US went in to fill the gap, and then when hezbollah bombed the marine barracks, france came out in support of hezbollah.

France obstructed the coallition during the first gulf war. France obstructed the coallition during the second gulf war. Documents captured show that the French government was funnelling goods and weapons to saddam hussein in return for oil bribes. France helped saddam build his chemical weapons and nuclear facilities.

So, while I don't think that most americans hate the french people, the French government has done a very successful job of being an obstructionist pain in the butt.

Militarily, we dislike the French because there first impulse is to surrender. I'm retired from the military, I've worked with the French Army. The only group that is worth a damn is the Foreign Legion, and they're not French.

I think alot of americans would really like it if France would just acknowledge that there moment of glory was during the Peninsular wars (early 1800s). So just get over yourselves.

I don't think really either country or its citizens hate one another so much as both nations have an incredible tendency to be stubborn and very egotistical. One nation's superiority complex does not preclude another's. Each nation think's it is the best and then tries to foist its interests on the other. That is the nature of politics. How it is done can be perceived as hatred. That is too strong. Disagreements are fleeting over decades. France has been a steadfast ally of the US for over two centuries. To say things will be perfect in any relationship that old would be farcical. Without France there would have been no United States. So when we disagree with an ally this good we should listen and not disparage. More often than not they tend to be right. Sometimes they may not be but no close relationship goes without argument.

It is because the French abandoned us during the UN negotiations over Iraq. The French were a major beneficiary from the oil for food scandal in Iraq. They were making a lot of money with that and did not want us to get in the way. They would rather allow a murdering dictator to remain in control then loose the source of illegal money over the program.

We would probably not be at war right now if France and Russia would have stepped up during the Security Council meetings at the UN over Iraq. They didn't and then our leadership had to make a choice and they chose to go into Iraq without the support of the security council and it has cost us American lives.

In a nutshell, I think a lot of americans view france as too passive, too liberal on a lot of social issues, issues that are shaping our world today like immigration. For years, france flung the doors wide to all comers, now are reaping the karma of that, plus there was france's stand against the iraq war, which the pro-bush types don't like.
At the end of the day, what americans probably hate most about france is that they don't speak english all the time.

hello LisaJohnsonian, i know frenchpeopl cause i live in Brittany so i hope u to excuse my english.
that's right frenchpeopl are proud and i hope american or mexican or british (ect...) too. france was the first powerful country a long long time ago ; (france's territory is 6% of the US'territory, and france's population is 20% of US'pop) nowaday france's economy just represent 16% of the US'economy. that's why french cling to what they still have got.
french are a little bit more too proud about their little independance of US'product and they don't care about its like americanpeople don't care about french's product, that's normal.
french peopl can't bear Bush that's right, but they can't bear their own government too. u know bill Clinton was (and is) very appreciate by the french.
some years ago france n' USA were friends. nowaday american are the same american and french are the same french but it's the idiots who maintain the hate.
france thanks USA for the help they give us during WW-I n' WW-II but now it's finich and french don't understand why american peopl continue to use this argument, our grand-fathers,(my grand-fatha fought against the Nazi in brittany, he didn't speak french), so our grand-fathers are the real heros, but us, we just can play to the playstation. never forget french and german is now the biggest friends around the world.
if american don't like french or vice versa, it's just because someone tell us... i just hope u never hate an other person even if it makes u a badthing...
