I have an appointment tomorrow at the Spanish Consulate for a tourist visa. I am participating in the study abroad in my school for 1 month.
The consulate ask to see my bank statement is it a way to verify if i can afford to stay in madrid? what amount are they looking for? Everything is paid to my school (tuition, insurance, host family...) I have about $13,000 in my account. would that be enough?

Yes, the regular amount required for a tourist visa is at least $700 (for 9 days) and $70 per additional day of stay. For a 30-day visa those would be $2170. The consular officer wants to see the bank statements of the last three months to assure the sum has not just been added to support the visa application.
BTW: U.S. citizens and citizens of certain Central and South American countries do not need a visa for short studies in Spain for less than 90 days.

They only want to see enough funds to cover your stay in Spain, and hthat's way more than you would need.
