My niece is wanting to come live with us for a year in the US, she is from New Zealand. She just wants to have the experience of living & going to school in a different country. What do i need to do to get things in motion??.

Hi, first you need to find a school where she would want to go! Once you think you have that narrowed down, you should try to call and talk to the international programs office of the university (I assume). (Note, you don't mention what type of school she's looking at, i.e. high school, college, technical school ...).
Essentially, the process works like this. The school will issue a form called an "I-20" to the prospective student. The prospective student will use that form I-20 to go to the US embassy in order to get an "F-1" student visa.
Note, she could also look into various student exchange programs, particularly if she's in high school. In that case, she would be traveling eventually to the US on a "J-1" exchange visa, and the program in which she would participate would have all the details on how to get that visa once she was accepted into it.
