Hi,
I need a student visa for about a year to study for a masters in the US. How long in advance do i need to apply and how long does it usually take to process applications?
If i have a police caution from about 3 years for travelling with a child bus ticket, is this likely to affect me?

If you look on college websites, they tell you that if you are hoping to enter into the Fall Semester, you need to apply by December of the preceding year. That is because they need to make all of the visa arrangements, make sure they receive all of your transcripts and documents and then make the necessary preparations for you. It was such a hassle for my cousin who came to the US because she was able to get a visa at the last minute but the college didn't expect her to be able to get the visa so they weren't ready.
You should make arrangements to take the GRE/LSAT/GMAT or whatever graduate school examination well in advance of your application deadline. It is a good idea to start applying by 1 September of the preceding year because then you can send in any supporting document by 1 December and make sure everything is in good shape.
As for offense, they will ask if you have been arrested for any offenses but they are mainly looking out for the violent or habitual offenders who are looking to enter the US and cause problems. If it is a minor offense, they will see it and not worry about it, but they might ask you about it at your embassy interview. If it is a cut-and-dry case, you will have no problems. But really figure out which you university you want to go to and their Office for International Students will work with you through the entire process.
