Okay so I'm going to Scotland this year July 23 and coming back August 3. Now, I'm putting in my request for a passport tomorrow and I'm a u.s. citizen and all that. However, I keep hearing that my passport has to be valid for at least 6 months before I go on my trip. Does this mean I have to have had it for 6 months before I can leave?? Because if that's the case then I am totally screwed.
But I went to El Salvador a few years ago and I got my passport in one day at the office in LA and then went on my trip the next week. So what does the 6 month validation mean?

What? I'm sort of confused, I'm not sure what they mean by 'valid' so if it needs to be 'valid 6 months beyond' i have no idea what that is. 6 months beyond my trip? It's strangely worded, explain please?

Since you are just getting your passport now, you do not have to worry.
What the rule means is that, if your passport is going to expire within the next 6 months, then you need to renew it before your trip. They do not want Americans travelling abroad and then realizing after they get to a foreign country that their passport has expired, and they have go through hoops to get it renewed from abroad before they can return home. |

Some countries require that your passport be valid at least 6 months BEYOND the dates of your trip. Check with the nearest Embassy or Consulate of the countries you plan to visit to find out their entry and visa requirements |

Generally, a nation that you visit will require that the passport that you hold be valid 6 months PAST the date that you plan on departing the nation that you are visiting.
The United States and the UK are members of the "6 month club", so these restrictions do not apply for visits between the US and UK.

let's say your passport was going to expire march 23rd of this year. okay?
you would not be able to travel because you would not have enough time left on your passport,airlines would not let you board,
when you travel to a foreign country? your passport has to have 6 months left of validity after you come back to the US,
so? as soon as you get your passport? it is good to go.no waiting time,
you will be alright. |
