UK residence permit for <6 months-what does it mean?

I finished my PhD in the UK I applied to extend my visa just before my viva. I got my passport back with a stamp saying Residence Permit for less than 6 month. It says: able to work as authorised by the secretary of State. I don't know what this means and I don't know whether my husband will be able to work as he got the same visa stamp but with no indication to his eligibility to work. We got leaflets with the passports saying that student can work full time in vacation time and I don't really know if I can really work and if my husband can also start his work.

You should call the embassy and ask them which agency you should contact to obtain the correct answer. I would be very leery of starting a job without this information...something tells me if you say, "But the guys on Yahoo Answers said it was ok", it would not hold.
