USA->Iceland electricity?
|
My friend is taking a trip to Iceland and I want to get her an electrical converter/adapter. However, I don't really know the difference between all of the different things.
CAn someone PLEASE suggest to me a (relatively cheap-20 bucks or less) system that will let her plug in her things (hair dryer, straightener, alarm clock, etc)? I think I need a converter as well as an adapter, but I'm not sure.

The normal electric current in Iceland is 220 volts and we use type C or type F plugs.
Most electric appliances in the USA are made for 110 volt, so your friend needs a converter that transforms the 220 volt electricity into 110 volt electricity, in order to use her electrical appliances in Iceland. She also needs a plug adapter so that she can plug into type C or type F sockets.
I cannot recommend any specific brands, but I'm sure it's possible to find cheap ones. |

No such thing!
First of all an adapter changes the shape of the plug BUT NOT THE VOLTAGE OR FREQUENCY! A laptop usually runs on multiple voltages and MAY only need an adapter.
Second of all a converter changes the the voltage but not the frequency!
In order to run anything that requires 120VAC instead of Iceland's 220VAC you need a converter. Most converters require an adapter (otherwise travelers would have to spend a lot of money for each converter so to avoid this there are adapters that adapt the outlet to the converter (it's cheaper).
Now there is another problem. Anything that uses the frequency of the power wil not run without changing the frequency. A non-digital electric clock is one of these items.
Anything that uses a large amount of power such as a "heating" item such as a hair dryer or straightener would require a heavy duty converter. These are the more expensive ones! Using a 50 or 100 Watt converter on a hair dryer that needs 1500 Watts will just burn it out.
Another consideration is if the item is grounded. Iceland doesn't use a third "prong" for grounding! Also there is no polarization of the outlet as 220VAC has no polarity per se.
An inexpensive converter/adapter can be used to recharge cell phones, etc. but there are limitations! Check the required wattage of the device against the output wattage of the converter.
If your friend is staying at a hotel have her check if they have hair dryers in the room (many hotels do). If not buy a cheap one once she gets there.
Sorry! |

A cheap converter really are worthless. I got one before I went to England. It fried both my hair dryer and curling iron.
I cannot suggest one per sea..but if you decide to get one, get a good one..that means it is going to cost more. Either that or buy a cheap blow dryer for your friend. lol

Electrical sockets (outlets) in Iceland (Lýðveldið Ísland) are one of the two European standard electrical socket types: The "Type C" Europlug and the "Type E" and "Type F" Schuko. If your appliance's plug doesn't match the shape of these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in order to plug in. Travel plug adapters simply change the shape of your appliance's plug to match whatever type of socket you need to plug into. If it's crucial to be able to plug in no matter what, bring an adapter for all three types.
