Hey I was wondering since I have an american passport, can i go to Germany and obtain a german passport?

Countries only issue passports to their citizens. A passport, amongst other things, confirms your citizenship status and this is why you have to provide sufficient documentation to confirm that before you are issued one for the first time. So to get a German passport you would have to become a German citizen first, and unless you have a parent who is a German citizen, in which case you would be a German citizen by birth anyway, you could only do this by naturalisation. One of the conditions for naturalisation as a German citizen is to have lived in Germany for 8 years. You would also need to have an adequate knowledge of the German language as this is another condition.
The other thing with Germany is that unlike the USA, it almost totally prohibits dual citizenship. If you became a German citizen, Germany would want proof that you have renounced US citizenship and given your American passport back. |

Germany would not allow you to take citizenship unless it was by descent, you would have to give your US citizenship. |

You can't get a German passport now unless one of your parents was a German citizen at the time of your birth.
If you moved to Germany and were able to establish permanent residency, the only way you could become a German citizen would be to formally renounce your US citizenship at the US Embassy/consulate as Germany does not allow dual citizenship except where one child's parent was a citizen of Germany |

If you have a German passport could you get an American one?
In both cases you would need a good reason, such as becoming a german citizen, or at least resident (with a certian situation.)I believe. I am possative that given your question you could not get a German passport just for having a US passport. |
