Visa J-1...and the 2 years rule?

I'd like to go to the US (I'm french) during the summer '10 for an internship. I'd like to know if the visa J1 is the good one, if I can enter the US before (how long) the beginning of the program and after? Plus, what is the two-year-rule? does it apply for everyone? (I'm gonna be 18 and trying to work as an intern for 1 month)

You can normally enter the US up to 30 days before the start of your program. the two year rule doesn't apply to all J visas. but if your program is being funded by the US or France, you would be subject to the rule. This would mean that you would have to return to France and live there for 2 years before you could live in the US as an immigrant or work in the US on an H or L visa. But it wouldn't stop you from visiting the US as a tourist or going to school in the US on a student visa, or from getting another J visa for that matter. |
