What's the difference between an Embassy and a Consulate?

I live in Melbourne, Australia. There is a/the (which word do I use? Is there only one?) Chinese Consulate on my street. I love it because Chinese people do Tai Chi on the nature strip in the morning and it's so sweet.

Ahem.

But then you also have Embassies... And I know they are in Canberra which is the capital of Australia.

So what's the difference?

In a nutshell :

An embassy is the main representation of a foreign country and deals with political issues as well as consular issues nationwide. A Consulate has a more regional focus and if it deals with political issues at all, it usually does so with regional leaders rather than with national ones.
E.g. The ambassador of Russia in Washington DC will have a lot of contact with federal officials while the consul in Los Angeles will meet and deal mainly with state (Californian) officials.

1. A building containing the offices of an ambassador and staff.
2. The position, function, or assignment of an ambassador.
3. A mission to a foreign government headed by an ambassador.
4. A staff of diplomatic representatives headed by an ambassador.

Consulate:
1. The residence or official premises of a consul.
2. The office, term of office, or jurisdiction of a consul.
3. Government by consuls.

Consuls:
consul - a diplomat appointed by a government to protect its commercial interests and help its citizens in a foreign country

Ambassador:
1. A diplomatic official of the highest rank appointed and accredited as representative in residence by one government or sovereign to another, usually for a specific length of time.
2. A diplomatic official heading his or her country's permanent mission to certain international organizations, such as the United Nations.
3. An authorized messenger or representative.
4. An unofficial representative: ambassadors of goodwill.
