Well, if you're talking about becoming an American diplomat, you need to work on your grammer a bit. Otherwise, you won't get past the written exam. Take a look at the sites recommended above. Foreign Service positions are divided into different areas and what you should study will depend to some extent on what interests you. If you talk to various Foreign Service officers, you'll find that they come from a wide variety of academic and work backgrounds. But, what they all have is a great deal of interest in world events, history, people, etc. If you want to get in, read constantly. Pick up newspapers and journals. Don't just concentrate on what is happening, but try to get into the why behind the events. Some economics is good, unless you intend to be an economics officer, in which case... Languages are also very helpful. The harder the language the better. Try to travel. Go out and see the world, however you can. Nothing beats real world experience. |

I know a few foreign service officers. A couple of them went to the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. Another was an English/Philosophy double major, then became a Navy pilot and then took the foreign service exam and got in. |
