What would you want them to build? A wooden dwelling that is right off the street?
Embassies are almost always impressive looking - huge massive estates sometimes! Most of the time it is for protection from terrorist attacks! Sometimes it is for show, this is where ambassadors entertain, this is also a place where intelligence agencies may operate out of or even where the president stays at occasionally.
You try to have a wide footprint so that there is a buffer zone between the outside world and the inner structures that house the people and office spaces. This is for safety reasons! A car bomb exploding outside the walls would do less damage to the inside structures.
I have been in over 30 different countries the embassies are almost always big and elaborate! Some countries may be a little cheaper to build in because they are a little safer. But for Iraq when bombs and rockets are going off every day it is a necessity to have a safe place to work at. |

I think that all UXB said in the previous post was correct. However, he failed to deal with what I consider one of the most important implications of this structure.
It is clear that the Bush administration that planned and executed this massive building construction project had very expansive ideas about the United States' future role in Iraq. If you are going to be very active in a country then you need this kind of structure to house and protect staff.
However, my view is that neither the Iraqi people nor the American people are going to want the size and type of American involvement that George Bush and the neocons had in their demented minds. My suspicion is that a considerable portion of that structure may be surplus to the real needs very soon after the Obama inauguration -- at least we can hope. |
